What to Check First
If your Apple Pencil is not working, you are not stuck with a $79–$129 paperweight. Most of the time, the cause is something simple, a weak charge, a stale Bluetooth connection, or an iPad that needs a restart, and you can fix it yourself in a few minutes.

This guide will help you the fixes in the order most people should try them, from the quickest wins to the deeper troubleshooting steps, and covers every current model: Apple Pencil (1st generation), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C), and Apple Pencil Pro. It also covers the trickier version of this problem: an Apple Pencil connected but not working, where your iPad shows it as paired yet it still won’t write or draw.
Quick Diagnosis: Why Your Apple Pencil Not Working?
Not sure where your problem fits? Use this table to jump straight to the right fix.
| Symptom | Likely Cause | First Fix |
| Pencil won’t pair at all | Low battery, Bluetooth off, or a case blocking the connector | Charge for a few minutes, confirm Bluetooth is on, remove the case |
| Apple Pencil connected but not working | Software glitch or a corrupted Bluetooth pairing | Restart the iPad, then forget and re-pair the Pencil |
| Works, then randomly stops (intermittent) | Interference from other Bluetooth devices, or a dirty/loose tip | Turn off nearby Bluetooth accessories, re-seat or replace the tip |
| Won’t charge or battery drains fast | Debris in the port/magnets, or a failing battery | Clean the connector, try a different charging method |
| Only works in some apps | App-specific bug, not a Pencil problem | Update the app and iPadOS, then retest in Notes |
| Apple Pencil Pro not working | Squeeze/hover features need specific iPad + iPadOS versions | Check compatibility and update iPadOS before assuming it’s broken |
| Nothing works after trying everything | Damaged tip sensor or internal fault | Book a Genius Bar appointment or Apple Support call |
Before You Start: Confirm Compatibility
This sounds obvious, but it trips up more people than any other step. Apple has released four Apple Pencil models since 2015, and they don’t all work with every iPad:
- Apple Pencil (1st generation) pairs via Lightning connector or, on newer iPads, a USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter
- Apple Pencil (2nd generation) pairs and charges magnetically on the side of the iPad
- Apple Pencil (USB-C) pairs by plugging directly into the iPad’s USB-C port
- Apple Pencil Pro pairs and charges magnetically, and only works with the 2024 iPad Pro (M4) and iPad Air (M2/M3) models, plus iPad mini (A17 Pro)
If you recently bought a used Pencil, borrowed one, or upgraded your iPad, double-check that your specific Pencil and iPad pair together before assuming anything is broken. If the combination isn’t supported, no amount of restarting or re-pairing will make it work.

Fastest Fixes First
Try these before anything more involved. They solve the majority of cases where an Apple Pencil is not working.
1. Charge It Even If It Looks Charged
A partially dead battery is the single most common reason an Apple Pencil stops responding, and the battery indicator is not always reliable when the charge is very low.
- Attach your Pencil to its charging method (magnetic side connector, Lightning port, or USB-C cable).
- Let it charge for at least 5–10 minutes before testing again.
- Check the charge level by adding the Batteries widget to your iPad’s Today View, or by going to Settings > Apple Pencil.

2. Restart Your iPad
A simple restart clears out minor software glitches that can silently break the Bluetooth connection between your iPad and Pencil.
- Press and hold the top button (and a volume button, on Face ID iPads) until the power-off slider appears.
- Slide to turn off, wait about 30 seconds, then turn the iPad back on.
- Reattach or reconnect your Apple Pencil and test it in the Notes app.

3. Confirm Bluetooth Is On
Apple Pencil relies on Bluetooth for anything beyond basic charging, so if Bluetooth is off, your Pencil simply can’t communicate with the iPad.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
- Make sure the toggle is switched on.
- Look under My Devices for your Apple Pencil. If it’s listed but shows as “Not Connected,” tap it to reconnect.
4. Remove Your Case or Screen Protector
Thick cases, especially ones with a raised edge near the magnetic connector, can prevent Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil Pro from seating properly enough to pair or charge. Some heavy-duty screen protectors can also interfere with palm rejection and pressure sensitivity.
- Take off the case and try attaching the Pencil directly to the bare iPad.
- If it pairs and works normally, you’ll need a slimmer case or one designed with a Pencil-compatible edge.

Apple Pencil Connected But Not Working
This is one of the most frustrating versions of the problem: your iPad’s Bluetooth settings show the Apple Pencil as connected, sometimes even at full battery, but it still won’t draw, write, or respond on the screen.

Why This Happens
A Bluetooth connection only confirms that the Pencil and iPad can talk to each other, it doesn’t confirm that the Pencil’s tip sensor is working correctly. When people describe my Apple Pencil is not working despite a connected status, the issue is usually one of these:
- A corrupted pairing that needs to be reset
- A loose or dirty tip that is not making a clean electrical connection
- An app-specific bug rather than a system-wide Pencil problem
- A damaged internal sensor (less common, but possible after a drop)
How to Fix an Apple Pencil That is Connected But Not Working
Forget the Device and Re-Pair
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the (i) icon next to your Apple Pencil under My Devices.
- Tap Forget This Device and confirm.
- Reattach or plug in your Apple Pencil and wait for the Pair button to appear on screen.
- Tap Pair.
Check and Reseat the Tip
- Unscrew the replaceable tip counterclockwise.
- Inspect it for damage, and wipe both the tip and the socket with a dry, lint-free cloth.
- Screw the tip back in, snug, but not overtightened.
- Test again in Notes or another drawing app.
Test in a Different App
Open the built-in Notes app and try writing or sketching. If the Pencil works fine there but not in a third-party app, the problem is with that app, not your Pencil. Update the app from the App Store, or check if the developer has a known issue listed.

Apple Pencil Connecting But Not Working (Pairing Fails or Drops)
If your Pencil won’t get through the pairing process at all, or the Pair button never appears, work through these steps in order.
- Charge for a full minute before retrying. If the battery is critically low, the Pair button may not appear until it has a small amount of charge.
- Remove interference. Move away from other Bluetooth accessories (keyboards, headphones, other styluses) that might be competing for a connection.
- Reset network settings as a last resort before contacting Apple: go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note that this will remove saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings for all devices, not just your Pencil.
- Update iPadOS. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available update — pairing bugs are sometimes fixed in point releases.
Charging and Battery Problems
Apple Pencil Won’t Charge
- Check the connector (Lightning port, magnetic contacts, or USB-C port) for lint, dust, or debris, and clean gently with a soft, dry brush.
- Try an alternate charging method if your model supports one, for example, charging Apple Pencil (USB-C) from a USB-C power adapter instead of directly from the iPad.
- Confirm the iPad’s own charging port and software are working normally by charging the iPad itself.
- Let it sit charging for a full 15–20 minutes; some models don’t show a battery status right away.
Battery Draining Unusually Fast
If your Pencil now needs charging far more often than it used to, that is typically a sign of natural battery wear rather than a setting you can fix. If the Pencil is still within its warranty period or covered by AppleCare+, this is worth raising with Apple Support.
Intermittent Apple Pencil Problems
An Apple Pencil that works for a while and then randomly stops responding is one of the more annoying variations of this issue, and it usually points to one of a few specific causes.
Bluetooth Interference
Crowded Wi-Fi and Bluetooth environments, coffee shops, offices, classrooms, can cause brief drops in the Pencil’s connection.
- Temporarily turn off other Bluetooth accessories to see if the issue clears up.
- Move away from routers or heavily congested wireless areas if possible.
A Loose or Worn Tip
Over time, the replaceable tip can loosen slightly with regular use, causing on-and-off responsiveness.
- Unscrew and re-tighten the tip.
- If it is visibly worn down or flattened, replace it with a genuine Apple Pencil tip.
Background App or Software Issues
Occasionally, a specific app (rather than the Pencil itself) will cause stuttering or dropped strokes.
- Force-close the app and reopen it.
- Update both the app and iPadOS to the latest version.
iPad Compatibility and Settings to Check
Sometimes Apple Pencil not working on iPad is not about the Pencil at all, it is a setting or a software issue on the iPad side.
Confirm Your iPad Supports Your Pencil Model
Revisit the compatibility list above. An unsupported pairing will never work, regardless of troubleshooting.
Update iPadOS
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any available update.
- Restart the iPad after updating, then test the Pencil again.

Check Apple Pencil Settings
- Go to Settings > Apple Pencil.
- Review options like double-tap gestures (2nd generation and Pro) or squeeze settings (Pro only) to confirm nothing has been accidentally turned off.
- If a gesture stopped working but the Pencil still draws normally, the issue is likely a setting rather than a hardware fault.
Apple Pencil Pro Not Working
The Apple Pencil Pro adds squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback, and Find My support on top of everything earlier models do, but those extra features come with stricter requirements.
- Squeeze and barrel roll only work on the specific iPad Pro (M4) and iPad Air (M2/M3) models Apple Pencil Pro was designed for, and require an up-to-date version of iPadOS.
- If basic writing and drawing work but squeeze, hover, or barrel roll don’t, check for a pending iPadOS update before assuming the Pencil itself is faulty.
- If Find My does not show your Apple Pencil Pro, confirm Bluetooth and Find My network features are enabled, and that the Pencil is charged and has been used recently enough to report its location.
- If none of the core functions work, no pairing, no charging, no drawing, treat it the same as any other model: charge it, restart the iPad, remove the case, and re-pair before escalating.
When to Seek Apple Service or Repair
Most Apple Pencil problems resolve with the steps above. It is time to contact Apple directly if:
- The Pencil won’t pair with any iPad, including one you know is compatible and working normally with other accessories.
- It charges but the tip never registers on screen, especially after a drop or impact, this can indicate internal damage to the tip’s sensor.
- The battery drains extremely fast or won’t hold a charge at all, and the Pencil is still within its warranty or AppleCare+ coverage.
- You have completed every relevant fix in this guide and the problem persists.
You can book a Genius Bar appointment, start a chat with Apple Support online, or call Apple directly to check your options for repair or replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions:
The most common causes are a low battery, Bluetooth being turned off, a case blocking the magnetic connector, or a stale Bluetooth pairing that needs to be reset. Start by charging the Pencil, confirming Bluetooth is on, and restarting your iPad.
A connected status only confirms Bluetooth communication, it does not guarantee the tip sensor is functioning correctly. Try forgetting the device in Settings > Bluetooth and re-pairing, checking whether the issue is limited to one app, and reseating the replaceable tip.
Go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the info icon next to your Apple Pencil, and choose Forget This Device. Then reattach or plug in the Pencil and tap Pair when the button appears.
Those features require both a compatible iPad (2024 iPad Pro with M4 or iPad Air with M2/M3) and an up-to-date version of iPadOS. If basic drawing works but these gestures don’t, check for a software update first.
Yes. If the internal sensor beneath the tip is damaged, often from a drop directly onto the tip, the Pencil may still pair and charge normally but won’t register on the screen at all. This typically requires a replacement tip or Apple service.
